Apostolic Letter: The Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality
Vatican City, December 8, 1995

By 1995, Rome had received many complaints from parents and clergy as well that the phenomenon of sex education had exploded in both public, private and Catholic schools. Chastity programs, in many cases, were the catholic schools’ response. However, these “Catholic” programs were really patented after the manner of the public schools and thus distorted the meaning of human sexuality in the context of marriage and the Catholic faith. They also usurped the role of parents and actually were in violation of the church’s teaching so well articulated in Divini Illius Magistri and also by Dietrich von Hildebrand in Sex Education: The Basic Issues.
