My second letter to The Pilot

April 7, 1992

I next challenged The Pilot to print only the portions of my critique quoting the papal encyclical of Pope Pius XI (1929) and the decree of the Holy Office from 1931, which clearly forbade what Patricia Miller was promoting.

Dear Father Conley:

When we spoke last week about my request that you print my response/critique to Mrs. Patricia Miller’s article, which favored sex education in the classroom, you said that your staff decided not to print it because you felt my critique was my own interpretation of Church teaching. Rather than dispute this with you, I have a different suggestion. Please print the enclosed. This version simply refers to the existence of Patricia Miller’s article and then goes on to present the Church documents that pertain to sex education. Certainly you are interested in promulgating Church teaching. Nothing in this version is opinion. I believe that a decision not to publish these documents is tantamount to being ashamed of them. Even Cannon Law confirms that the faithful have a right to know the teachings of the Church.

With every good wish for a Happy Easter.

Sincerely,

Alice Ann Grayson
