Cardinal Law’s Reply to Oxymoron

March 8, 1994

The Cardinal wrote that he had confidence in his Ad Hoc Committee of experts and enclosed their Report.

While lengthy, the Report does not address the Magisterium’s authority in banning all classroom sex education. Sadly, the Report reflects a misunderstanding of the distinction between sex education and education in Christian morality. The Report calls for no change.

The Report also uses a clever, cunning tactic towards me. It marginalizes me as “prudish” in sexual matters. Reserve in speaking of sexual matters is not caused by prudery, but rather by respect for that which is private, intimate and sacred.

Perhaps the best example of the Ad Hoc Committee’s lack of purity was their statement, “The boundaries of privacy have fallen away.”
